A few months ago, I started a new series based on some feedback on my PocketfulofJoules Instagram account. A very sweet Instagram friend sent me a DM saying how much they enjoy seeing different ways to style the same items over and over again as inspiration for their own looks. (Psst…you can find a bunch of these saved under the “OOTD Breakdown” highlight on Instagram). So, I thought it would be fun to start highlighting some remixes here on the blog.
You can find my previous posts here:

For today’s highlight, I’m going to focus on remixing a solid colored dress.
These are actually a few different black dresses, but honestly they all serve the same purpose. I’ve accumulated them over the years (and one of them is no longer in my closet), but if I had to pick just one to keep… it would be the black eyelet dress (shown on outfit 1, 2 and 3).
A well-made solid dress can be an absolute workhorse for your closet and you can style it a ton of different ways. You can top it with a tied shirt, you can throw on a cardigan in any color, you can add a belt, and you can put a top underneath for the pinafore look. If you were going on a trip, you could style the same dress 10 different ways easily with just a carry-on.
Here are a couple ‘use your imagination’ ideas to add:
I know neither of these are black dresses, but they could be and they give a visual to my next two ideas. First, you can add an overskirt — this gold polka dot tulle skirt is layered over another one and could easily be layered over one of my solid dresses to give it a totally different look. The other idea is to add an underskirt. By adding my green-ish tulle skirt UNDER my polkadot dress on the right, it gave it a whole new feeling. And it doesn’t have to be tulle. You can try layering any of the skirts in your closet to see what you like when it comes to color combos or lengths.
I hope you like this new series and please let me know if you have a particular item you want me to highlight for you!
Very good ideas! Thank you! I will be shopping for a few cardigans. I need a good sweater set. I have always gotten alot of use from them. I just started packing away my summer clothes, so now I need to look forward to fall. Thanks for sharing.
