My Formal Wedding Look on a Budget

One of my dear friends recently got married and invited my husband and me to her absolutely gorgeous wedding reception. We received the ‘save the date’ months ago, so I had plenty of time to freak out over the formal dress code. Because here’s the thing, over the years I have collected options for many different scenarios – working in the office, working from home (and being Team’s video ready), bridal showers, baby showers, and even semi-formal weddings and work events – but a FORMAL reception was out of my wheelhouse.

Typically, a formal event requires dark suits or tuxedos for the men and a floor-length gown for the ladies. While I have plenty of knee-length or tea-length dresses and skirts, I did NOT have a floor-length gown sitting around.

So, my first thought was to check the thrift and consignment stores as I’m out and about. And I did that for a few months. I even purchased a formal gown at the thrift, brought it home, tried it on… and immediately turned back around and returned it to the store. I struck out and was starting to get nervous.

My next thought was to try a place like ‘Rent the Runway’ and borrow a beautiful gown and then send it back when I was done with it. I looked at pretty much every single one of their gowns that were available during the timeline of my event and found one or two that I was heavily considering. However, we all know that often something that looks great online doesn’t look as great on our actual body types. So, I was nervous that I’d put all my hope in a dress, have it arrive and hate it. Or have it not fit. Even with the back-up dress option. Also, the rental rates are not cheap. I’d be spending $100 – $130ish to rent a dress that I may hate, I’m not able to alter it if it doesn’t fit well, and I don’t get to keep it if I love it. So, nope to that.

Finally, I decided to do some online shopping. My criteria: I wanted something that I absolutely LOVED on me, something pretty classic that I could wear again, and something less than $150. I also narrowed it down to something in black. I like how I look in black and it will be handy to have a formal black dress in my closet for any future events.

I ended up with three main options:

I was unsure on sizing, so I ordered all three options from Lulus, since they have a free shipping and small restocking fee for returns. I also sized up, because I could always make something a little smaller if needed. I typically wear a size 10/12/14 depending on the dress, so I ordered each dress in an XL.

This one ended up being my favorite: The Radiant Charisma Black Chiffon Runched Tie-Strap Maxi Dress for $88.

I loved the sweetheart neckline and the overall fit of the dress. It was surprisingly comfortable and there was even a little extra room in the waist area if I wanted to take it in a little. The only thing I didn’t really like was the floppy tie straps, but I had the idea to use the front two straps to tie it into a halter top and just snip off the back two straps. The length was great too with the booties I wanted to wear.

I found the dress that would work for me and $88 was a pretty good price. But, I felt like I could do better. So, I took my search to Poshmark – I searched under Lulus as the brand, and the exact name of the dress.. and found one new with tags for $39. THIRTY-NINE dollars!

I returned all three of the dresses I tried on from Lulus for just a small restocking fee of $6 total. And here is the final look:

I have high hopes that the photo the professional photographer took will turn out MUCH better than my blurry iphone pic! But, it’s not bad for a secondhand (new with tags) dress, secondhand (basically new) booties and some adorable tights from Amazon!

Getting Your Ducks in a Row: 3 Tips for a Smooth Transition When Leaving Your Job

The past couple months have been super busy over here on a professional front, with me leaving my previous job and moving on to an exciting new position. While I don’t write much about my work-life, I did think that this could be a great chance to share a few of my tips on getting all your ducks in a row when making the jump.

Tip #1: Use Your Benefits to the Fullest

Once you’ve made your decision, it is a great time to maximize your current benefits before they expire. Most health insurance policies end shortly after you leave a job, so be sure to use them while you can. Schedule your annual check-ups, dental cleanings and other appointments before your last day – especially if you’re already up to or close to your deductible. We hit our deductible by August this year, so in September we had ALL the doctor’s appointments and refilled all our prescriptions!

Tip #2: Take Advantage of PTO and Sick Days

Before giving your notice, check your PTO balance and see if you can use some time for things like personal appointments, mental health days or even a short vacation if you’re feeling burnt out. In my case, I had vacation time that would be paid out when I left… but any sick time would be forfeited. So, it made sense to use those sick days to knock out my doctor’s appointments. Even better – I got them all finished BEFORE I put in my formal notice of resignation.

Tip #3: Book Personal Appointments

When you start a new job, you may want to hold off on taking time off for a while as you settle into your new position. I planned my transition by ending my previous job on a Wednesday, so I could use the rest of the week getting items off my ‘to do’ list, like an annual meeting with my kid’s school and a haircut for myself. Now I’m all set until the new year!

Planning Another Family Trip to Arizona, Nevada and Utah!

If you follow along with our family travel adventures, you may remember when we went on a fabulous spring trip to Arizona, Nevada and Utah in April 2023. If you need a cheat sheet, once we returned from our vacation I broke the trip into bite sized posts:

Well, we loved the trip and the convenience of having Kanab as a home base, that we decided to go again! Which means I’m in full-on planning mode to determine what we want to re-visit in a different season, what we want to add to our list, and what we want to skip this time.

Here’s our current plan:

Day 1: Fly to Vegas.

Our evening flight into Vegas worked out so well that we decided to do it again. We will land in Nevada around late in the evening and take an Uber straight to our hotel. Last time, we stayed at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino right on the Vegas strip because it was incredibly cheap and looked ridiculous. However, it was a little icky, so this time we picked a different hotel. This time we will be checking out the Downtowner Boutique Hotel, which looks kitschy and adorable, is reasonably priced, AND has great reviews.

Day 2: Vegas to Kanab, UT

Much like our last trip, we will check out of our hotel, find breakfast somewhere and pick up our rental car. However, this time we will also plan to pick up a lunch somewhere to take with us out of town. We plan to drive through the Lake Mead area (again) and stop at the Valley of Fire State Park (again), but this time we will be prepared with lunch so we don’t get hangry!

We absolutely LOVED Valley of Fire last time, so we are planning to spend more time exploring and doing some of the hikes in that area (on a full stomach!). From there, we will continue to Kanab to check into the house we rented for the week. We still need to figure out:

  • Where to eat breakfast in Vegas.
  • Where to pick up lunch to go in Vegas or on our way out of town.
  • Which hikes to do in Valley of Fire State Park.

Day 3: Explore

We have the full day open, so we need to decide which area we will be exploring. Some contenders for this day:

  • Coral Pink Sand Dunes – you can rent a sand sled for a half-day, which sounds pretty fun!
  • Johnson Canyon Road – located only 9.5 miles east of Kanab and gives you great views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Lots of sightseeing on the drive and also hikes you can do at scenic overlook points.

Day 4: Explore

Another full day open to explore, so we need to nail down where we want to see. Some contenders for this day:

  • Zion National Park – we went on our last trip and loved it. We may rent e-bikes again (depending on weather) and do that again, this time hiking different trails.
  • Toadstool Hoodoos Trail – this one is pretty near where we are staying and has a 1.9 mile round-trip hike that looks easy and fun to do.

Day 5: Explore

Our last free day for exploring! Some contenders for this day:

  • Bryce Canyon Park – we went on our last trip and there was snow, so we were limited to the trails we were able to hike on. Determine if there is snow this year – if yes, do we want to revisit? If no, we will get the chance to do the hikes we missed.
  • Mossy Cave Trail – a really beautiful trail right outside Bryce Canyon Park
  • Cottonwood Canyon Road – a 46 mile each way scenic drive through the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This is a heavy driving option – it will take about 2 hours each way for this sightseeing drive. A few stops along the way include: Grosvenor Arch, and the Cottonwood Wash Narrows hike.

You may be asking why I don’t have Page or the Grand Canyon on this trip’s lists. Well, we visited Page, Glen Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon on our last trip. We loved it, but since we have less days to explore, we decided to leave that area off our list for this trip. As for the Grand Canyon, we could drive to the Northern Rim… however, it is quite far and there is a chance that there will already be snowfall. So, we are skipping that this time too.

Day 6: Kanab, UT to Vegas

This is our packing up and traveling back to Vegas day. We will pack up at our VRBO, check out, and make the around 3-hour drive back to Vegas. Once there, we will return our rental car and check into Caesar’s Palace for the evening. Which happens to be Thanksgiving. So, if you have any suggestions on where to get a good Thanksgiving dinner in Vegas, let me know! Depending on the weather, we may do some exploring and check out some of the casinos (I think Jack would love to see the gondolas at the Venetian).  We will probably also go to bed pretty early, since we have to wake up super early to catch our flight home.

Day 7: Fly Home

We have a super early flight, so we will take an Uber to the airport and may do a little dozing on the plane.

Our trip is a bit shorter this time (last time we had 9 days and this time just 7), so I’m sure it will fly by! If you have any recommendations for places we shouldn’t miss – whether it be food options, hikes, stores, views, or a place to eat a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner – let me know!
