Loving Right Now: Approval Junkie by Faith Salie

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had a delicious library trip and shared my pickings with you all.

One of the books I grabbed on a whim was Approval Junkie: Adventures in Caring too Much by Faith Salie. I had never heard of Faith Salie before, but after reading the book jacket, I figured I might as well give it a try.

Holy crap you guys, this book was sooooo good.

So good in fact that I felt like I needed to bring it up in a second blog post to encourage you all to add it to your TBR pile. You can find it here on Amazon, but I recommend that you check for it at your local library for free.

First, about Faith. Here’s the bio from the book jacket:

Faith Salie is an Emmy-winning contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning and a panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! She also hosts the PBS show Science Goes to the Movies. Salie attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship and while her fellow scholars went on to become governors and Pulitzer Prize winners, she landed on a Star Trek collectible trading card worth hundreds of cents. She lives in New York City with her husband, two children, and her husband’s dog.

I’ve been on a bit of a non-fiction comedy or behind-the-scenes type of kick lately. A lot of them have been hit or miss and many have been downright disappointing. But let me say, I really, really enjoyed this book. There were many times where I would just re-read a sentence a few times because it was the PERFECT sentence that just popped you in the head with a joke that you didn’t even see coming. I was deeply invested in her stories about her first marriage and I literally cried when reading about her experiences with infertility.

Read this book. READ IT. And then email me and tell me how much you loved it.

Loving Right Now: Summer Lovin’

It’s been a few months since I’ve done a Loving Right Now post, so I figured it was time to share a few more things that I’m currently enjoying!

{Pssst, my Loving Right Now posts aren’t paid or sponsored or anything. They are just stuff that I’m totally digging now and thought you would like too. You can check out my previous posts here}

Book Love: Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick
Find it here on Amazon

I like Anna Kendrick. I’ve enjoyed her performances in the Pitch Perfect series, The Last Five Years, the Trolls movie (I SWEAR it’s actually really good) and Into the Woods. I know she’s been in a billion other things too, but I haven’t seen much of them. Anyways, I kept hearing about her book and finally added it to my library request list. After reading other celebrity memoir-type books, I didn’t have super high hopes for this one. But I really did enjoy it. She’s funny and a little weird and I feel like we’d totally be friends in real life.

Comedy Love: Ali Wong (Hard Knock Wife) and Jim Jefferies (This is Me Now)

I randomly started watching some different comedy specials on Netflix a month or so ago and really enjoyed Ali Wong’s Hard Knock Wife and Jim Jefferies’ This is Me Now. Both specials have moments where I totally laughed and snorted out loud, which is how I measure comedy success. I also watched Ali Wong’s Baby Cobra (it was released before Hard Knock Wife, but I ended up watching it second) and didn’t love it as much. So, if you are looking for some silly (and NOT safe for kids) entertainment, check them out!

Television Show Love: Humans

I came across one of those ‘watch these awesome shows on Amazon Prime’ articles at some point and screenshotted a bunch of options. My husband and I were looking for something new to watch and decided to give Humans a try. There are currently 3 seasons available, but we have only made it through the 3rd episode in the first season so far.

Watch the trailer for season 1 and tell me it doesn’t creep you out a bit:

I love it. And it makes me feel goosebumpy. But I still love it.

Now it’s your turn to share, what are you totally loving right now?

Loving Right Now: Armchair Expert

When it comes to celebrity crushes, I have a few. The Rock, obviously. Chris Pratt, when he’s being a superhero. And Dax Shepard. There are more, but they fluctuate according to what I’m watching.

I first started my Dax crush when I saw Without a Paddle.

That movie, by the way, is still one of my favorites and I literally cry with laughter every time I see it. He’s super cute, tall, hilarious, really earnest and smart, oh and he is married to Kristen Bell. They are basically everyone’s idea of #couplegoals, because of how funny and honest they are about their lives together and their relationship. At least, the part of it they share on social media.

So, when I saw that he started a podcast called Armchair Expert I was like, um hell no. I’m not a podcast person.

But then, he kept posting about the guests that would be joining him each week, and I still thought. Nope, that sounds cool… but still not a podcast person.

And then, one day on my 90 minute drive to work I couldn’t find any good music to listen to. All of the radio stations were disappointing me, I was bored of my Pandora offerings and I really need to update my iPhone music playlist. So, I decided to throw on the Armchair Expert podcast episode where Dax interviews Ellen DeGeneres.

And it was SOOOO GOOOD.

I turned it up and listened hard to every single moment of that show. Then, because the last 10 minutes stuck in my head for the next few days, I commented on his Instagram… and he liked my comment AND RESPONDED!

And then, it still stuck in my head so I made my husband listen to the last 10 minutes of the podcast and then we talked about it for 30+ more minutes.

I figured, if I liked that episode maybe, just maybe, I’d try another one. So, I listened to the Armchair Expert with Anna Faris (crush #2’s soon-to-be ex-wife, and superstar of her own right). And it was really good too.

There are 11 episodes so far, and I’ve only had the chance to listen to 2 of them… but now it’s totally on my ‘to do’ list for long workday car rides. Without Jack in the car, because there is some salty language.

While I still can’t say I’m a podcast person, I can say that I’m an Armchair Expert podcast person. And I *might* branch out and try Anna Faris’ podcast too when I run out of episodes. Maybe.

Do you listen to Armchair Expert? Are you a “podcast” person?
