My December Stitch Fix: A Grinchy Fix with A Gem

With all the boxes being delivered to my front porch this month, my December Stitch Fix is one of my most anticipated. Sure, I’ve got lots of clothes in my closet by now, but there is something about the holidays that makes me want to treat myself to a little something-something while I’m shopping for everyone else!

Here’s my stylist note for December:

Disappointed in last month’s Fix of casual tops, so let’s try again! Think super soft, drapy, comfortable tops that I can wear on the weekends and still look cute (v-necks are best). Nothing that will cling to my tummy. I pinned a few new pins for you to check out. Maybe one sparkly item for Christmas.

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #27… so I’m kind of a fan!}

Before we check out the individual items, I should probably warn you that this Fix was pretty terrible. In fact, it was so terrible I couldn’t resist making this sneak peek video:

If you’re not already following me on Instagram, you can find my PocketfulofJoules profile here.

Now, let’s take a closer look at what was in my December Fix:

Item #1: Laila Jayde Whistler Relaxed Fit Knit Top – $54
Apparently the phrase “relaxed fit” is totally subjective, because this fit is in no way relaxed on my body type. I tried to be a good sport and take a picture anyways…

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

I pretty much hate everything about this top, other than the color. The black accents on the shoulders look like I’m wearing Hunger Games pajamas, it is made out of a weird fabric that somehow clings to all the wrong spots AND it is super itchy so I’m going to just go with the phrase, “um… NOPE!”

Item #2: Papermoon Arriba Embroidery Neckline Raglan Knit Top – $48
This top is kinda cute with the raglan knit fabric and the contrasting sleeves. There is even some snazzy embroidery around the neckline that gives it a little something extra special.

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

I don’t dislike it, but I also don’t love it. To spend $48 on a casual shirt, I’m going to have to love it!

Item #3: THML Lucine Faux Leather Trim Open Cardigan – $98
Can somebody please explain to me what the hell is happening here? Am I being eaten by a giant sweater or did Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company send me the world’s ugliest housecoat?! I’m not really sure what my stylist was thinking when she looked over everything I’ve purchased over the past couple years and then pulled THIS out for me to try.

The rest of the outfit: similar top, exact pants and exact boots.

I’m further baffled that my stylist decided to size up on this to an XL! This cardigan is so ugly that I’m almost offended that it was sent to me.

Item #4: Skies are Blue Melle Fringe Detail Pullover Poncho – $68
Woah, a poncho. Well, this is totally outside my comfort zone… which is good, right? I’ve never actually tried a poncho on, because they seem a bit too hippy-dippy to me. I mean, other people look really good in them… I’m just not really sure about ME in a poncho. On the other hand, it’s a socially acceptable way to LITERALLY wear a blanket as clothing. But, what the heck do I do with my arms?

Stitch Fix Review - Skies are Blue Melle Fringe Detail Pullover Poncho - Pocketful of Joules

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

Okay, one side of me thinks it looks pretty cute and very ‘fashion-y’ in the picture, but the other side thinks it looks like I stuck my head through a tree skirt. I just can’t get over the fact that I’m wearing a blanket as clothing (even though blanket scarves are totally my jam). I could really see liking this if I were pregnant because it’s a super cute way to hide a little baby bump. However, that ship has sailed and so will this… right back to Stitch Fix.

Item#5: Papermoon Danza Raglan Printed Sleeve Knit Top – $48
Oh thank goodness, a keeper. I was getting worried that I was going to lose my styling fee by sending the whole box back! This top is AMAZING with super soft knit and really adorable contrasting sleeves. It’s actually the same brand as the other baseball-sleeve top, but this one is so much better. I can see myself wearing with tons of different outfits – it looks equally cute with my black jeans, blue jeans and burgundy skinny jeans.

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

Am I being a bit of a Grinch, or did this Fix kind of suck? Luckily I really like the Papermoon printed sleeve top, so I won’t lose my Stylist Fee. But HOLYMOLY wasn’t the rest of it pretty terrible?! Looks like there is no need for a survey this month, but I’d love to hear your comments anyways!

Can you rock a poncho without looking like a baby wrapped in a blanket? Does anyone actually LIKE the open cardigan? I’m trying out a new bright lipstick, are you digging it?

Pssssssst… make sure you come by tomorrow for a super awesome HOLIDAY GIFTCARD GIVEAWAY BONANZA!!!

My November Stitch Fix: Comfy + Casual

The weather outside isn’t frightful yet, but I’m already feeling the urge to snuggle up under a fuzzy blanket, drink some hot cocoa and nibble on some snickerdoodles.

After over two dozen Stitch Fix boxes, I’m doing quite well on work-appropriate clothes. However, I’ve recently realized that my weekend casual wear could really use some upgrading.

With that in mind, here’s what I told my Stylist:

I really need help with casual clothes that I can wear comfortably on the weekends (soft fabrics, easy to wash). I’d love a whole Fix of casual tops and sweaters (v necks are best). I’d also love to try a super soft blanket scarf (less than $50).

Here is my “typical” weekend look and I pretty much throw on some variation of this outfit any day that I’m not working in an office. It’s comfy and casual, but I’d really like to step it up like one notch above my typical t-shirt and jeans.

Pocketful of Joules - typical casual look

T-shirt (Thug Life Shirts), comfy open cardigan (Stitch Fix), stretchy skinny jeans (Democracy), a scarf and boots (Clarks). On Friday I grabbed these jeans out of my donation pile and decided to try my hand at making them into skinny jeans by narrowing the ankles so that they work with my favorite boots… and I’ve worn them every day since. {Let me know if you are interested in a quick tutorial.} Also, if you are looking for the PERFECT pair of casual boots, these are pretty fantastic.

Pocketful of Joules - boots

I recently became a Clarks Trendsetter and they sent me their Valora Sky boots which are like a cross between sexy motorcycle boots and the most comfortable boots ever. They are also currently on sale!

Okay, back to the Stitch Fix reveal! Let’s see what my stylist sent for me to try:

Stitch Fix Review - November 2015 - Pocketful of Joules

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #26… so I’m kind of a fan!}

Item #1: Loveappella Tiffina Knit Top – $54
My first thought when I pulled this top out of the box is that it was exactly what I was hoping for. It is so soft that it’s like they weaved it from puppy fur. Um… but not in a creepy Cruella De Vil kind of way. The open neck and fun cuff detail is right up my alley too. The ONLY thing I wish were a little different is the color, as I don’t know if light grey is the most flattering color on me.

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

Keep or Return? I can see myself wearing this shirt with a pair of comfy jeans, layered under an open cardigan with a scarf, or even just thrown on with yoga pants, so it will definitely get worn. I emailed Customer Service to see if any other colors are available before I check out.

Item #2: Market & Spruce Jamie Button Down Cotton Shirt – $54
I was a little confused when I saw this shirt because when I think “comfy weekend style” my mind doesn’t go to a button down top. Even though this top is a softer, less structured style, it’s still not really what I’d go for when grabbing clothes on a lazy Saturday. Actually, it’s not really what I’d go for on a workday either. It is a nice basic though, so I styled it with my berry colored pants and knee-boots. {If you’d like to see a bunch more ways to style these pants, check this post out}

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and similar boots.

Keep or Return? If you are just building your wardrobe, this top might be a great match for you. However, I don’t love it and the bust is pulling on me so back it goes!

Item #3: Colorblock Verbena Sequin Detail Blouse – $68
In the note my stylist sent with this month’s Fix, she mentioned that this top on my Pinterest page is a style that Stitch Fix carried last year and that I might like the version she sent over as a dressier replacement. The top is pretty much the perfect holiday top. However, unlike the style I pinned it shouts MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I paired it with a skirt I just got from Modcloth (it is the Essential Elegance skirt) and some heels. {Speaking of, do you think this skirt is a keeper?}

The rest of the outfit: exact skirt and similar shoes.

Keep or Return? The blouse is awfully festive! However, as pretty as it is I can’t really see myself wearing it any other time besides December.

Item #4: RD Style Gilianna V-Neck Zipper Detail Sweater – $68
What is it with the grey tops this month? I mean, I like grey… but it seems like my stylist is ALL about the grey. This is a great basic sweater with a v-neck style and a fun zipper detail. It is kind of what I’m looking for, but really similar to the sweater she sent me last month that I kept.

The rest of the outfit: exact pants and exact boots.

Keep or Return? Honestly, I don’t love the zipper detail. It’s just kind of random and the metal of the zipper is really coarse and scratchy. I can imagine Jack going in for a tackle-hug and hurting himself on it, so it’s a no-go.

Item #5: Echo Adalia Striped Blanket Scarf – $38
I like big scarves and I cannot lie. I mean, what is the use of a wispy little scarf that hardly keeps your neck warm? I have a couple scarves that I’ve been wearing for the past couple years and was thinking I should switch it up a little. So I asked my stylist to send me something soft and this is what I received.

Stitch Fix Review - Echo Adalia Striped Blanket Scarf - Pocketful of Joules

The rest of the outfit: exact jacket, exact t-shirt, exact pants and exact boots.

This scarf is pretty much EXACTLY what I imagined in my head. Its super soft, has a cool pattern and is a great size that actually keeps you nice and toasty. I did have some trouble tying it in a way that didn’t look super weird, but finally ended up with this way of wearing it that I really like.

Stitch Fix Review - Echo Adalia Striped Blanket Scarf 2 - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? I love this scarf and will definitely be wearing it all winter long!

Help Me Decide!
This month’s Fix was really hit and miss. I love the Loveappella top and the blanket scarf, so I’m leaning towards keeping both of them. The black button up shirt is just not really my style, much less my weekend style. As for the red sequin blouse and grey zipper sweater, I think I’ll pass.

So now it’s time for you to weigh in! What should I buy?

{the survey is now closed}

11/18/15 Update: Thank you so much to everyone who voted in the survey and also those of you who left a comment below. I decided to go ahead and get both the blanket scarf and the Loveappella top because OHMYGOSH it is so fuzzy! I emailed Stitch Fix about switching out the color and/or sizing up for a little more of a comfy fit and they are sending me the next size (but won’t do a color exchange). Thanks for your help in deciding and be sure to stop by next month for my December Fix review!

My October Stitch Fix: Help Me Decide!

You know when the weather is changing from summer to winter (because in Maryland, we basically get 9 days of fall) and suddenly nothing in your closet looks good on you?

Well, I was totally having one of those days last week where more clothes ended up on the floor of my room than on the hangers in my closet. This in-between weather is always a little perplexing until I can figure out how to start dressing in pants again…

Which means it was the perfect time for my October Stitch Fix!

Here was my stylist note for this month’s Fix:

I’m good on dresses for now. So, let’s do more fall blouses, sweaters, skirts, etc. I pinned some new stuff. I am forever searching for a belted peacoat in an interesting color (not black, brown or camel) — it MUST have a belt to cinch it in. Now that boots are back, I could use a pair of jeans/colored jeans with more fitted ankles (no zippers) to go with booties.

As always, I had my note in the system and kept it updated up until my Fix was in progress, but it seems like my stylist didn’t see it. She said in her note “I didn’t have any requests from you this time so I just went for it!” but um… I HAD requests.

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #25… so I’m kind of a fan!}

Let’s see what she sent:

Item #1: Le Lis Cady Textured Swing Skirt – $58
I basically wear skirts and dresses from May to September, but switch to pants as soon as the weather gets cold. I can always use a professional skirt that looks good with tights and knee-boots though, so I was excited to pull this one out of the box.

I like that it’s a heavier version of the swing skirt I wore all summer, but in a pretty navy fabric with a subtle pattern. The pattern was throwing me off though when I went to style it with something already in my closet. Anything printed seemed like it was competing with the skirt and the navy skirt looked terrible with any all black tops. I do have this one jewel-toned top that looked nice.

Le Lis Cady Textured Swing Skirt - Pocketful of Joules

I then tried the same blouse with a jean jacket for a more casual look and a blazer for something more formal.

Le Lis Cady Textured Swing Skirt 2 - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? I don’t know and could really use your help. In theory, this skirt could be a great transition piece… I’m just not really sure what else to wear with it. Also, I’m thinking it might look bad with black knee-boots, but maybe if I did grey or berry-colored tights it would work? Or maybe I just need a pair of brown knee-boots.

Item #2: 41Hawthorn Woodling Faux Leather Detail Blouse – $58
When I first saw this blouse, I was kind of disappointed because I have a similar blouse already – same color, dressy material and tab sleeves. This top has some fun details though with the faux leather around the neckline and also on the sleeve tabs.

41Hawthorn Woodling Faux Leather Detail Blouse - Pocketful of Joules

I paired it with a pair of black skinny pants and bright yellow patterned flats for an outfit that I could totally wear to work. Here’s a close up of the faux leather accents:

Woodling blouse details - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? As much as I like this blouse, I feel like it would be a little redundant in my closet. I mean, why would I grab this top when I have one the same color that can do the same job? I love the faux leather detailing and if this were in another color like burgundy or black, I’d snatch it up. I emailed customer service to see if any other colors were available and I’ll keep you posted!

DL1961 Cherise Skinny Jean – $178
When Stitch Fix sent me the email saying that my box was shipped, I totally peeked (as usual) to see what I would be getting. Well, when I saw that they were sending me a $178 pair of jeans I snort-laughed, because WHAT THE HECK?! I posted my feelings on Facebook and then did some Google stalking to see whether these jeans were made of gold and diamonds. After clicking around a bit, I found that most ladies who received the DL1961 jeans LOVED them… so I got scared.

When my Fix arrived and I slowly pulled them out of the box (while angels sung, of course) I almost didn’t want to try them on… because THEY COST $178. But for you guys, I did. I mean, I tried to… but couldn’t even get them on because they are too small.

DL1961 Cherise Skinny Jean - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? I’ve been searching for a pair of burgundy skinny jeans and the color of these are exactly what I’m looking for. Have you seen anything similar anywhere else that I should check out? If I can’t find them, I’ll definitely be asking for a similar pair at a lower price-point in my next Fix.

Alice Blue Boulder Button Down Blouse – $58
This blouse confuses me – it’s a plaid shirt, but is made out of silky material. It’s like when a lumberjack has to get dressed up.

Alice Blue Boulder Button Down Blouse - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? If this were a cotton or flannel shirt, I would have loved it. But as it is, I don’t.

Laila Jayde Banna Hooded Open Cardigan – $58
I love the cranberry color of this cardigan and it is super soft too. I’m typically not a huge fan of open cardigans, but this one has a nice comfy vibe going on.

Laila Jayde Banna Hooded Open Cardigan - Pocketful of Joules

I paired it with one of my favorite t-shirts, skinny jeans and slip-ons for a comfortable weekend look.

Keep or Return? I like this cardigan, but once again I already have similar items in my closet that meet the same need (the navy Market & Spruce cardigan from my December 2014 Fix). Part of me wants this anyways so that I can have some variety on weekends. I DO wear that navy version a lot! What do you think, is it too similar to what I already have or different enough that it makes sense to buy it?

Help Me!
UGH, I’m feeling so indecisive on this Fix. Part of the issue could be that I measured myself for my upcoming Beachbody challenge and took pictures RIGHT before I tried on everything in my Stitch Fix box. So, I wasn’t really feeling great about myself. I do like the skirt, leather detail blouse and open cardigan though. So I’m leaving myself in your hands to decide which one I should buy!

{the survey is now closed}

10/20/15 Update: Thank you so much to everyone who voted in the survey and also those of you who left a comment below. Based on your recommendations, I decided to keep the hooded sweater and send everything else back!
